Richmond Zoning Code Refresh: What You Need to Know

The City is working on a re-write of the zoning ordinance – they are calling it the Code Refresh project. A re-write process means developing new zoning categories and descriptions, and then mapping those categories to every parcel in the city. This means that YOUR parcel may have a zoning update. There are definitely parcels in our neighborhood that will be impacted.

The zoning code is a legal document that describes what may be built on a piece of property. The last time the zoning ordinance was re-written was in the mid-1970s. Since then, the zoning code has had piece-meal updates to accommodate the city’s changing needs throughout the years.

Next week, the City is hosting several open houses for community members to look at the initial proposed draft districts and maps and provide comments. Maybe you want to attend? Meeting information is below.

The City will also share the material online next week on their Code Refresh webpage, www.rva.gov/coderefresh.
